The 2013 N.E.H.A.A Ploughing Match Report
(The 2014 Match was cancelled as the match site was waterlogged after two nights of heavy rain)

[2015 Match Report] [Home]

Ploughing commences

Thanks to the generosity of Mr Peter Pritchard , Neatham Estates, and Farm Manager Daniel Crawford, the 2013 North East Hants Ploughing Match finally got under way at Wyck Farm.

The first attempt to hold the Match in October coincided with gales and heavy rain, which led to the match being abandoned just as competitors were arriving but on a dry morning in November the postponed match finally got under way, with 33 ploughmen turning out to demonstrate their skills, on what proved to be an excellent site at Wyck Farm.

Early Morning

There were few visitors at the start of ploughing with both the Catering and Mission Control caravan apparently deserted apart from stewards and Judges vehicles.

Gordon Newman

Despite the lack of sunshine Gordon Newman was obviously enjoying the day on his vintage Fordson, a 1959 Dexta, as he begins to work his crown.

Peter Crockford

2013 NEHAA Champion Ploughman was Peter Crockford, a regular competitor in the Vintage class at the North East Hants Ploughing Match with his 1940 Fordson "N" Tractor and Ransomes trailer plough

There were only two crawlers on the field this year, an all family affair with father, D.R Bicknell (left below) and son S. R. (taking a long look at his finish, right below) ploughing with their International crawlers in the trailed vintage class.

Father . . . . . . . .and son

Reversibles

Kevin Alexander's John Deere and J. Gammons Ford were also busy in the reversible classes, both competitors using Dowdeswell ploughs.

Derek Allan

Also in the trailed Vintage class, Derek Allan was on his penultimate run with his 1942 Fordson.

Derek Turner

Seen here making his final run, the 2013 Reserve Champion was Derek Turner, a previous NEHAA Champion and another regular competitor in the Vintage classes for mounted ploughs with his 1959 Fordson Major and Ransomes Plough.

Heading for Lunch

The five furrow reversibles had already finished their plots and after a quick survey of the oppositions efforts were heading for lunch.

Lunch break

As was President Richard Janaway, taking a the chance for a lunch break before his presentation duties.

After one cancellation and a postponement it was third time lucky? for show secretary Rebecca Peek's first North East Hants ploughing match, where she was fully occupied sorting out the the results and awards.

Grateful thanks to Rebecca for dealing with the Admin and the and also Susie Parish for her invaluable assistance an keeping the Ploughing Chairman in order on on the day and marking out the on the Saturday, also thanks to our Judges and Stewards on the Day and Frank Gartfree for his tractor operation skills during marking out. Last, and by no means least our Sponsors (listed below left) who make the whole event possible.
